Deep cleaning (scaling)

Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) clears hardened plaque below the gumline — the most effective way to stop gum disease before it costs you teeth.

Quick facts
  • Done in two short visits (one side at a time)
  • Local numbing — fully comfortable
  • Often covered as a periodontal service
  • Stops bleeding gums in 2–4 weeks

What to expect

  1. 1

    Periodontal exam

We measure pocket depths around each tooth and look at recent X-rays to confirm scaling is the right step.

  2. 2

    Numb the area

We use local anesthesia so you feel nothing but the cleaning sensation.

  3. 3

    Scale & root plane

Ultrasonic tools clear the hardened tartar; hand instruments smooth the root surface so gums can reattach.

  4. 4

    Irrigation & follow-up

We rinse with antimicrobial solution and book a 6-week recheck to confirm healing.

Cost & insurance

Deep cleaning is billed per quadrant (¼ of the mouth). Most PPO insurances cover 60–80% after deductible when documented with periodontal pocket measurements.

Frequently asked

  • 01Is deep cleaning the same as a regular cleaning?

No. A regular cleaning works above the gumline. Deep cleaning reaches below it and treats early gum disease.

  • 02Will my gums hurt afterward?

Mild soreness for 1–2 days is normal. Over-the-counter pain relief is usually enough.

  • 03How often do I need it?

Once you've had scaling, we switch you to a periodontal maintenance every 3–4 months to keep things stable.
